The death of baby girl ‘Summer Chambers’ in Johnston town, Pennsylvania in December 2016, that garnered international media attention due to the devastating circumstances surrounding the case.
The five-month-old's body was found in a bassinet of her home on 22nd December. Also the bodies of her parents were found, 27-year-old Jason Chambers and his 19-year-old girlfriend Chelsea Cardaro.
According to the police the couple died because of an overdose of the opioid fentanyl around December 15, they had several times a fatal dose in their body. Apparently they were dead within minutes of overdose. Their Baby ‘Summer’ held on for four or five days and later died dehydration and starvation.
That day Cardaro posted a picture on her Facebook account with Summer and Chambers, which is still visible on her wall captioned, "The one and only love of my life."
On 1st Feb it was reported that Summer’s death has been ruled out a homicide, while her parents deaths were ruled as accidental, the parents cannot be charged. However, there is a possibility that whoever sold the couple ‘opioid fentanyl’ will be charged.
Cambria County Coroner Jeffrey Lees said that when she makes a ruling, her job was to determine the cause of death. She said at this point there is nobody to charge, the charge is still homicide.
Johnstown Police Department acting Chief Jeff Janciga hopes that his community can learn something from the awful situation.
"I’m hopeful for the future, hopeful that this child did not die in vain, hopeful that we can learn something from this as a community, hopeful that opiate-dependent persons can realize before it is too late that they need help, if, for nothing else, for the sake of their children’s well being," he said.
