Pennsylvania Mother ate twigs and drank urine to save Family

Pennsylvania mother survived a whole day in bitterly cold temperature outside the Grand Canyon last weekend, only by eating twigs and drinking her own urine in a desperate attempt to find help for her family after they got stuck on a snowy road.

Kristen Hasse, who is the sister of survivor Karen Klein of Palmer Township detailed the incident in an email to Philly.com. She said that Klein her husband and their ten year old son Isaac were to the Grand Canyon National Park’s north rim for a sightseeing adventure.

But when roads got covered in snow, they decided to turn back and got stuck in a ditch.

Karen Klein took the decision to trek back to the highway, which was about 10 miles away in order to find someone for help or at least get proper reception in her cellphone. after reaching near to the highway, she found out that highway was closed due to snow storm, but she saw a sign for the entrance of the Grand canyon park, which was 14 miles away, so she decided to move along.

Klein’s body dehydrating as she ran out of food and water, so she had to survive upon twigs and her own urine to keep her body hydrated. Hasse said that her sister had nearly hiked for nearly 30 miles in the chilling conditions for 30 hours straight, when finally she found an empty cabin and some blankets.

That’s when rescue team who were on the hunt for the family, found Klein and then the rest of her family. They were taken to a local hospital and were treated for frostbite

The chief deputy for Coconino County ‘Jim Driscoll’, called the rescue a “Christmas miracle.”

"Our guys are very ecstatic. This is a save," Driscoll said of the searchers. "We were able to get a family back together for Christmas. It could have gone very bad very, very easily."

Karen Klein is an assistant biology professor at Northampton Community College. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Cedar Crest College and a master’s degree from East Stroudsburg University.

Haase said that her sister has had wilderness survival training before something that undoubtedly helped her through the entire ordeal.
